Pastoral care in our school seeks to cherish, support, nurture and encourage every member of the school community. Each class group has a tutor who builds a relationship of care with the group and has a key supporting role. The pastoral care team meets weekly and liaises with Guidance Counsellors, Learning Support, Class Tutors and Mentors to provide support to students and ensure a safe holistic and productive environment for all students.

Scoil Mhuire operates a Mentor Programme in which teachers and senior students help in-coming First Years to settle into life in secondary school. Senior Mentors meet with small groups of First Years on a regular basis in Term 1 and organise sporting and group activities to help them bond with their new friends. Throughout the year they keep a watchful eye on their young charges.

The role of the Guidance Counsellors at Scoil Mhuire has two distinct but complementary elements. Firstly, guidance which aims to assist students with subject choice, career decision making, applying to third level, outside guest speakers, access to on-line college and career information in the computer rooms and administration and feedback of psychometric testing. A personal, confidential counselling service is also available to all students who request it themselves or are referred by a member of staff or parent/guardian. Where it is deemed necessary or beneficial to the students outside referrals to other professional agencies can be made with the permission of parents/guardians.

The Students' Council provides a line of communication and acts as a liaison between students, management, staff and parents. It represents the view of the student body on matters of concern to them.

Our aim is to create a caring school environment by encouraging students to become more aware of the running of the school, to be supportive and inclusive.

Student Council meetings take place on a fortnightly-basis where all class representatives discuss any issues of concern.

The school offers a wide range of supports to students who require Learning Support or Resource teaching. These supports are tailored to each student's individual needs. We aim to provide a broad, balanced and appropiate education in a caring and supportive environment so that students can achieve their highest potential, keeping in mind the holistic development of each student in regard to their personal, social and emotional development. We try to create opportunities for students with Special Educational needs to experience success and so foster self-esteem in order to enable them to lead independant and fulfilled lives. Parental involvement in students learning programmes is encouraged.

Transition Year is a one year compulsory programme between the end of the Junior Certificate and the start of Leaving Certificate programme. The main goal of a Transition Year Programme is to promote maturity. Through the Transition Year Programme, young people become more independant learners. Transition Year aims to help young people prepare for adult life, especially through contact with work places and career interests. The Transition Year Programme includes activities such as Horse Riding, Golf, Swimming, Outdoor Pursuits, Kayaking, Hill Walking, Gym Fitness, Dance Aerobics, Tag Rugby, Coaching and also a further extension of some activities listed above. The Transition Year residential trip is a highlight of the Transition Year Programme. The Transition Year gives you opportunities to:

• Learn about working as part of a team.
• Develop a variety of new skills.
• Discover more about your own personal strengths.
• Explore the possibilites offered by computers and information technology.

Students are given the opportunity to take part in a wide range of activites within the sports extra curricular programme. Activities are offered on a recreational and competitive basis.

School teams are entered in the following sports: Ladies and Boys Gaelic Football, Boys and Girls Futsal, Boys and Girls Badminton, Swimming, Horse Riding, Girls Spikeball and Volleyball, Boys Soccer and Handball.

Physical Education is a compulsory subject and plays a very important role in student life in Scoil Mhuire. The Value of Physical Education in the promotion of both physical and mental health is strongly recognised within the curriculum. All Junior cycle students receive a double class on a weekly basis and follow a structured and varied programme over these 3 years.

Students at Scoil Mhuire are very fortunate to have access to excellent facilities including a purpose built PE Hall, a gym, outdoor courts and a large astroturf.

Areas of study at Junior cycle include Movement Skills, Gymnastics, Dance, Orienteering, Athletics, Basketball, Olympic Handball, Volleyball, Badminton and Rounders.

At Senior cycle students are offered opportunities to experience further activities not available on the Junior cycle programme. Some of these activities include Swimming, Golf, Yoga, Zumba, Set Dancing and Coaching.

The focus of the Physical Education programme is to create positive learning experiences for students. Our primary goal is to provide students with the skills and understanding to be able to incorporate physical activity into their everyday life in order to maintain good health.

Scoil Mhuire offers a unique opportunity for students to save money regularly through the school Credit Union. This is operated in conjunction with the local branch and is co-ordinated by the Transition Year Credit Union committee, under teacher supervision.
